The student can find sources, collect evidence, and explain the result within the time available. It also leaves room for a personal view without becoming only opinion.

Is it better to choose a familiar topic or a challenging one?

I think it is usually better to choose a topic that is partly familiar and partly challenging. If the topic is completely familiar, the student may not learn much, and the project can become boring. If it is completely new, they may spend too much time understanding basic terms before they can make an argument. A mixed topic gives them a base to start from and a new question to explore. For example, a business student could study an industry they know, but examine a new problem within it. That balance makes the work realistic but still worthwhile for the student.

What advice would you give to someone choosing a research topic?

A title can sound good but still be vague, while a question shows exactly what the student is trying to find out. Then I would ask them to check whether they can find at least a few reliable sources quickly. If they cannot, the topic may need to be changed or narrowed. This early test saves time because it shows whether the idea is possible before the student becomes too attached to it. It also gives the student a clear starting point for notes.
